As the name already suggests, conscious sedation does not result in the complete loss of consciousness a general anaesthetic would cause. The purpose of conscious sedation is to help you to relax during dental treatment. During conscious sedation, an anaesthetist, a doctor specialising in anaesthetics, will administer medicines to you intravenously. They will allow you to remain awake during your treatment but will reduce your ability to sense both time and pain. This is a safe procedure and there is no need to worry. Your recovery time will be much faster than if you had been under a general anaesthetic and you will be allowed to go home after 1–2 hours. Dental procedures performed under conscious sedation usually take around 1–2 hours. Before we can perform conscious sedation, you will undergo a full review by one of our general dentists. This visit is also an opportunity for us to discuss your treatment and related costs.

When is conscious sedation best used?

If you are worried or anxious about going to the dentist, conscious sedation can help you to relax during treatment and forget about your fears. Conscious sedation might also be indicated if you are having extensive dental treatment or the procedure is likely to take some time. These types of treatments include the placement of one or more dental implants and the finishing and polishing of dentures. Conscious sedation may also be a good idea if you are having multiple fillings done at the same time.
